‘My God, I’m Queer’ – A deeply moving account detailing a bereaved fiancés journey to try and prevent a future tragedy won the Best TV Programme / Show honour at the Asian Media Awards.
The 9th AMA ceremony took place at the Emirates Old Trafford on Friday night (October 29) with Good Morning Britain presenter, Adil Ray, ITV’s Rohit Kachroo and Eastenders star Jaz Deol also amongst the winners.
The 2021 Asian Media Awards are supported by the University of Salford and hosted by Sky Sports news presenter Bela Shah.
The award was presented by Debra Prinselaar, Director of Film & Broadcast Media at the University of Salford.
Produced by Behind The Facade Films, ‘My God, I’m Queer’ has been screened in England, Wales, Canada and India in 2020 and was also screened on Film4.
The programme was directed by Matt Mahmood-Ogston and produced by Meera Mistry who both collected the award.
Matt set up the Naz and Matt Foundation in memory of his soulmate and fiancé, Naz, who passed away two days after being confronted about his sexuality by his religious parents.
It was the first time that they knew their son was gay, in a relationship with Matt for 13 years and that they were planning to get married.
Matt said: “We were absolutely shocked and surprised when our film ‘My God, I’m Queer’ was called out. Winning this award means so much to us, and to all of the contributors who so generously gave up their time to participate.
It really will make a big difference – and will allow us to reach even more people with the important message contained within the film. Thank you.”
