A sports reporter who has secured ‘’agenda-setting’ exclusives was named Outstanding Young Journalist at the 10th Asian Media Awards.
The Daily Mail’s Isaan Khan was selected from a shortlist of the some of the most talented journalists in the UK including reporters from Sky News, BBC News and ITN.
The 2022 awards celebrated the achievements of journalists, broadcasters and leading creative industry professionals.
The ceremony hosted by Sky Sports News presenter Bela Shah saw special awards for LBC News host Lisa Aziz, BBC 5Live broadcaster Nihal Arthanayake and acclaimed TV and stage actor Kulvinder Ghir of Goodness Gracious Me fame.
The awards honoured journalism, online, radio, TV, creative media, stage, theatre and live events in 23 categories and was back at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate where the first awards took place in 2013.
The University of Salford are the Premier Partners for the awards which aim to shine a light on the accomplishments of media professionals from across the UK.
Isaan said on stage: “I would like to thank the Asian Media Awards for this event – what a great event it is and also the Daily Mail too.
“I joined on a Steven Lawrence Scholarship a few years ago and was given a platform to cover a variety of stories.”
Among those was the ongoing racism scandal at Yorkshire Cricket Club and the story of Azeem Rafiq who was also in attendance at the event.
Isaan added: “It is something I am very proud of and he deserves some recognition too.”
Isaan was presented the award by Allan Walker, Dean of School, School of Arts and Media and Paul Broster, Journalist and Associate Dean at the University of Salford.
Announcing the winner Paul Broster said: “Never has it been more important in the age of digital overload and disinformation to do what all leading journalists to cut through it all.
“Our nominees are doing this at local, regional and national platforms.
“The winner is someone who has done something all leading journalists do – change the agenda with exclusive material.”
In a series of exclusive articles for the Daily Mail Isaan has led the national coverage on allegations of racism at Yorkshire County Cricket Club, through sustained and exclusive reporting of ex-player Azeem Rafiq’s battle against the club.
Isaan’s special reports investigated racism at a grassroots cricket level and how Yorkshire was preparing to sack up to 16 employees.
Elsewhere he revealed that England’s cricketers played no part in the controversial ECB decision to cancel the Pakistan tour.
He also broke numerous other agenda-setting exclusives, a successful campaign to recognise Britain’s first black female Olympian and a bombshell undercover investigation which saw Wembley Stadium suspend a security firm on the eve of the FA Cup final. Much of Isaan’s work has been picked up by other media outlets and broadcasters.

The 2022 Asian Media Awards winners of all categories and special awards were revealed at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate on Friday October 28.
Previous recipients of an Asian Media Award include Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Waris Hussein, Art Malik, Mehdi Hasan, Nina Wadia, Anita Rani, Shobna Gulati, Faisal Islam & Adil Ray.
The University of Salford are Premier Partners to the Asian Media Awards.
