A doctor who took it on himself to dispel health myths was named the Best Video Channel at the 10th Asian Media Awards.
Dr Karan Rajan’s videos, which aim to put fact before fiction, have racked up tens of millions of views. He has amassed over 5 million followers on Tik Tok, 400,000 on Instagram and has a further 600,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel.
The 2022 AMA’s celebrated the achievements of journalists, broadcasters and leading creative industry professionals in Manchester.
The ceremony hosted by Sky Sports News presenter Bela Shah also saw special awards for LBC News host Lisa Aziz, BBC 5Live broadcaster Nihal Arthanayake and acclaimed TV and stage actor Kulvinder Ghir.
The awards honoured journalism, online, radio, TV, creative media, stage, theatre and live events in 23 categories and was back at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate where the first awards took place in 2013.
The University of Salford are the Premier Partners for the awards which aim to shine a light on the accomplishments of media professionals from across the UK.
Dr Karan Rajan speaks out against this misinformation in his own unique style which he hopes will reach a generation who were unlikely to get their news from traditional media sources.
His videos range from a light-hearted look at how people of no medical background or experience are sharing advice to more serious matters pertaining to health and well-being. In many cases the wrong advice is reaching impressionable minds and Dr Rajan wants to simply give a more reasoned argument.
In his short and entertaining responses, he tackles everything from sleeping patterns to more complex medical procedures and how and why these might happen.
During Covid, the mass hysteria and paranoia being shared by some people across social media was something Dr Rajan was keen to tackle. Even up until recently, he has taken up the obligation to help share genuine medical advice to his followers who may be taken in by the countless Covid misinformation.
He is also featured and writes on major news, lifestyle and charitable sites where he shares more detailed advice on medical and health matters.
Dr Rajan is an NHS surgeon and Clinical Lecturer at the Imperial College London and the University of Sunderland.
The 2022 Asian Media Awards winners of all categories and special awards were revealed at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate on Friday October 28.
