ITV’s Global Security Editor, Rohit Kachroo was named MMU Journalist of the year at the 2021 Asian Media Awards.
The 9th AMA ceremony took place at the Emirates Old Trafford (October 29) with Good Morning Britain presenter, Adil Ray and Eastenders star Jaz Deol also amongst the winners.
The ceremony was hosted by Sky Sports news presenter Bela Shah.
A special invitation was also extended to the ten 2020 winners and tributes were paid throughout the night to all those who were unable to be at the awards after a tumultuous 18 months.
The award was presented by Derek Bousfield, Head of Department at the Manchester Metropolitan University and was collected on behalf of Rohit by Michael Jermey.
Rohit has been reporting and investigating some of the biggest stories of the past year.
Rohit and his team reported first-hand on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and were caught in the crossfire as the Israeli army opened fire.
When violence broke out at the Al Aqsa mosque, Rohit was the only international TV journalist to witness the clashes – and when his cameraman was trapped outside he used his iPhone to capture the scenes.
Rohit was the only British journalist to be live at the scene of George Floyd’s murder. He secured several world exclusives during the aftermath of the storming of the Capitol, identifying a rioter as a politician and far right campaigner.
Rohit and his team also tracked down the young woman seen leading protestors into the US Capitol and arrived at her doorstep before the FBI and revealed that she was accused of stealing the laptop of Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker.
In an exclusive investigation he followed a people smuggling route from ISIS camps in Syria to the streets of east London and also secured a world exclusive interview with Bill Barr, the Attorney General fired by Donald Trump.
Rohit was unable to be at the event as he was called to an assignment in the US days before.
Rohit said: “I am delighted to tell you how honoured I am to receive this award. I must commend the fine journalists who were nominated in this category – every one is a star and together their work includes some of the most important investigations here at home and the finest frontline reporting in Afghanistan.
“But in news, particularly television news, stories are never about any one journalist. So I pay tribute to the many ITV News colleagues who I have worked with closely this year, in London, in Northern Ireland and in the Middle East.
“To brilliant producers and to editors who know when to let us get on with it, when to encourage and when to dissuade us.”
The Asian Media Awards 2021 ceremony took place on Friday October 29 at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.
Previous recipients of an Asian Media Award include Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Waris Hussein, Art Malik, Mehdi Hasan, Nina Wadia, Anita Rani, Shobna Gulati & Faisal Islam.
